La Confession de M. Bastareaud

Sue Pommarède (Rosehill College) made the most of a news item She has created two role play situations based on an article featuring the confession of this French rugby player who found himself lying to cover an unfortunate situation brought on by excessive alcohol consumption! Sue's role play activities fit in the giving ADVICE, WARNINGS, SUGGESTIONS theme while talking about alcohol problems. It also suggests a Verb focus (green highlighting).

INPES "Un Fumeur sur 2 Meurt du Tabac": an ad campaign

Florence Lyons (Matamata College) recommends this information website which presents the French Anti-Smoking Campaign launched on World non-smoking day (31 May 09).  View and comment the video, listen to the short, punchy podcasts and/or get inspiration from the downloadable posters to create your own campaign.

Healthy Eating

Jo Guthrie (Canterbury University Regional Advisor) recommends the 2 following websites.  They are both targeted at children/teenagers and have some brilliant material for building a unit on Healthy Eating. Students can navigate them independently also to gather vocabulary and general information on this topic. www.mangerbouger.fr  provides a full range of info in plain French on food groups, healthy menus, eating out as well as balanced eating.

Visit www.coolfoodplanet.org.fr and discover a teenager friendly site where your students can take a quiz, learn about top healthy foods and read labels, as well as useful tips for healthy eating.  There is also physical activity ideas.

Pictures as cues to discuss/write about Health related matters.

Florence Lyons (Matamata College) compiled this PPT for her year 12 to practise giving advices. Her students work on this AO by describing problems related to health (drugs/alcohol/obesity/anorexia/sex / teenage pregnancy). The many pictures provide cues for students to write an article about the issue. For assessment purposes all students describe the same pic. Ref:  NZALT workshop 2008 with Jo Rittey (See Tool Box, Ideas for Teaching in English).

In the second document, Florence has developed a short vocabulary and reading comprehension activity to outline how the total Smoking Ban helps smokers give up. The next worksheet provides a follow up activity based on a text outlining that overall cigarettes sales are down.
